Whilst researching paper art I came across the paper cuttings of Hans Christian Andersen who is better known for his fairy tales. One such papercut created by Andersen for charity in 1864 features a short poem at the centre, which reads;
This paper cut is somewhat dear,
Half a rigsdaler we’ll say,
But it’s really a whole fairy tale,
Your kind heart will have to pay.
This final papercut illustrates the entire Andersen tale and is cut from a single sheet of 90gsm paper. Size: 1782mm x 846mm [framed – 1930mm x 990mm].
The frame holds the final papercut between 2 panes of glass and was made by House of Frames Ltd, Swansea.
This project was featured in Creative Review's 2011 Illustration Annual (pictured below).
